About Scott Brodie

Scott Brodie's first book was published in 1983, under the pseudonym of Samuel Brimson (his maternal grandfather's name). Since then he has had more than seventy books published across a wide range of subjects including transport, Australian history, world history, histories of Asian nations, social histories, military and political topics. His most successful was Australia's Own: The History of Holden which sold in excess of 45 000 copies in Australia. His books are found in most school and public libraries across Australia.

Scott was born in Brisbane. Not long afterwards he spent some time in Port Moresby before returning to Brisbane and his grandparents' home at Rosalie. Most of his youth was spent in the Brisbane suburb of Stafford, other than a life-changing two years spent in Penang when his father, Ken, was stationed in Malaya (as it then was) with the Australian Army.

His early working years were a mish-mash of mistakes and lost opportunities starting as a message boy with an advertising agency (in the days before couriers) and ranging through storeman in a softgoods warehouse, telephone sales clerk for an electrical appliance manufacturer, shop assistant in a jewellery store, and traffic clerk with an airline. He found his way into work as a sales representative selling earthmoving equipment (abject failure), then pens and watches (more success), and then a relatively long stint in the greeting cards business.

In 1978 he moved to Sydney and began a career in the book business. After five years in management with a major distributor he began writing, which he has continued off and on ever since. He has worked in most aspects of the publishing industry: distribution, sales, marketing, promotion and editorial.

In the 1990s Scott travelled extensively in Asia managing export sales as well as researching opportunities for publishing enterprises in various countries. Scott was also a media spokesperson and made many appearances on radio and television.

In recent years Scott has expanded his interests to include mapping of cities with highly detailed and well-researched tourist maps of London and New York being published.

After a very intense period of writing in the first half of the 2000s, Scott took a break to recharge and renew. In January 2011 the first of his new books for Trocadero Publishing was published. This is a series of educational/reference titles covering a wide spectrum of Australian history and society.
